Past Spring Research Festivals
In 2017, the 21st Spring Research Festival was held at Fort Detrick. The two-day event brings members of the scientific and education community together through an assortment of activities. Activities include a Scientific Symposium, a Collaboration Forum, Poster Blitz, Keynote Speaker, and Poster Presentation with Exhibitor Tent Show along with a Mini Science Symposium. We were proud to have more than 100 participant’s posters on display representing 15 different categories. More than 1,000 people attend the Spring Research Festival. Here’s what a few of them had to say about the importance of it and the STEM Program:
- Mayor of the City of Frederick, Randy McClement "I come to it every year. I think it’s a great opportunity to see what the students have put together. I really like the enthusiasm of each of the presenters. Having this happen here, which is inside this city, we’re hopefully encouraging these students to take their talents and move it into the real world and help the workforce stream for the city of Frederick. We are the top-end of the I-270 tech corridor, this is perfect, this is the kind of thing that helps keep our workforce here in the city."
- Frederick County Superintendent, Dr. Theresa Alban "The first time you try something, it may not work. A big part of doing research when you’re inventing things is trial and error until you get it just right. So STEM is a critical component that we try to weave into as much of our curriculum as possible."
- 2017 Spring Research Festival Keynote Speaker, Dr. Steve Holland "One of the beauties of science is that it’s really about challenging ideas. The best way to challenge ideas, share ideas, is to come together and exchange them."
- COL Colin Greene (RET) "These are maybe the Nobel Prize Winners of twenty to thirty years from now. These are the people who will find methods of detecting cancer and possibly curing."
